my cd writer is not detecting any cd's but it is opening properly

Just because it opens doesn't mean that it will work. Sometimes the optics wears out.
The first option is to make sure that the drivers are not corrupted and are working properly. Go to device manager and check for the installed drivers and remove them (uninstall) then reboot the system and allow the wizard to replace and install the drivers for the drive.

If that doesn't work then you can try this fix from M$.

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

If that doesn't work....you will need to replace the drive or buy an external one to use!
