Cannot Delete/Remove Startup Programs in MSCONFIG for WinXP Pro

I have a Toshiba Laptop with Windows XP professional. My problem is when I unchecked some startup entries in MSCONFIG and then restart my computer, the startup entries reappears again. I mean there would be a double startup entry (one is check and the other is uncheck for the same startup entry). How do I permanently delete the startup entries in the msconfig. I also used msconfig cleanup utility but it didn't work. I don't have any spyware or virus in my computer. Thanks for the help.

The item is clearly adding itself to the startup list, eg: attatched to something your comp runs on startup, thus re-adding itself to the msconfig list. You need to uncheck the item yes, but then be sure it's process has stopped under task manager and remove all the files you can associated with it, even if you can't delete them all, remove the .dll etc and it shouldn't be able to run the next boot, allowing you to finishe deleting the rest of the files.

Cannot Delete/Remove Startup Programs in MSCONFIG for WinXP Pro

I also have the same problem as "rcg12779". For several years now, when loading major new programs or major updates to existing programs, I have used the run msconfig utility to do a clean boot.
Two weeks ago I repeated the same routine only to find when I rebooted into windows about half of the start up programs had rebooted again including the virus and spyware programs.
I quess there are links somewhere overriding the start up disable command but as a computer user rather than a computer expert I don't know where to start looking and what I would be looking for.
