BSOD ERROR - help

I recently had a windows update, I went to restart, and instead, my computer would not start, i kept getting a BSOD error (blue screen of death). My computer would not even let me start it in safe mode. So i read online to use a disk that came with the computer to reinstall my operating system. I ran a chkdsk/r which fixed it and now my computer will turn on. Now I can't access my start menu, my start bar, it wont drag & drop and won't copy and paste. I am afraid to restart due to the error I got the last time I restarted. All I want to do is back up my files but I can't since I can't drag & drop. Does anyone know what I can possibly to get it to work correctly without restarting??

whiterain,
Did you note the error code you received with the BSOD?
When you ran chkdsk did it correct many errors? If so your hard drive is possibly failing.
It would be worth checking the connections inside the computer but to do this you must shut it down.
You say you have no Start Menu. Do you have any icons on screen?
Explorer can be re-started by pressing Ctrl, Alt and Delete together, drop down the File menu in Task Manager and type Explorer into the box that appears then press Return. That may enable you to copy your files.

Right click on an empty space on the desktop. Choose the Arrange Icons By and make sure the Display Icons is checked.
