adobe photoshop freezing
 
why does my photoshop continue to "hold" memory even after i close my large files?sometimes i think it releases the ram,why? and how?any suggestions and answers are appreciated.ty.

You can try RamBooster2 program. It's free and should be able to clear that memory.

i have plenty of ram...4 GB ddr2 dual,680i LT mobo,q6600 intel quad,about 600 gb free hd.i made this pc so i could do this graphics thing and it seems to not be cutting it.the files we're working with are large; 700mb at times then we layer more on top of that till it gets to about 2.5 GB of ram in use........then it freezes.im using xp pro,adobe cs3,i used the 3 GB switch in bcd edit.helped a little not enough.do i need a server set up?64-bit?

I would make sure you have the latest updates and check your preferences in photoshop. Make sure the hard drive you have room on is selected. And maybe make some memory adjustments.

If that doesn't change it, I would say it's an XP issue. Make sure you have the latest drivers, shut down any programs you're not using with Photoshop open.

Hi,

even though XP can address 4 GB of RAM, only 2 GB of this is directly addressable by applications, the other 2 is shared with Windows. (More on this at: RAM, Virtual Memory, Pagefile and all that stuff.

Try increasing your permanent swap-file and look at fragmentations on the hd. Or upgrade to 64 bit XP which can address 128 GB! (Windows XP Professional x64 Edition: Top 10 benefits)
