active internet connection while on standby

i was wondering if it is possible to have a active internet connection while the computer is on standby or like sleep or hibernating mode, the reason i want to know is because i want to open a shop in a mmorpg game and keep it like that while the computer is on standby, sleep, hibernating one of those

The NIC card can be programed from the BIOS to be enabled to wake the computer up from sleep or hibernation. This is only in the case that the motherboard allows such an action.

Why not set the Monitor power to shut down after a certain period of time.

It's what I do when I have the computer on all night, either recording tv shows or crunching the video files into xvid files...

ya but my computer is a beast and all the fans are loud and wont let me sleep.

I replaced both of my cpu fans with Zalman heatsinks and fans, and the case fans are Antec 120mm Smartcool fans. They are very quite even when under heavy cpu load crunching video files to xvid format.

It depends what your priorities are though I suppose, I know what I would do...

You can't have your cake and eat it as well mate.

Computers do not use that much power per month, my quarterly power bill is about $120.00 which includes lights, cooking, hotwater, and the airconditioning running most of the time.

As I tell other people who want to cheapskate get a job, or a better paying one...

I wished my quarterly electric bill was that low...I pay $226(US) a month on an anual average plan.

But I agree with wombat...the computer usage of electricity is not that much...less than that of a TV or refridgerator as they have low power usage.

i think I read somewhere that a computer left running 24/7 only costs like $40 per year which breaks down to just over $3 per month.

well if anyone know's how to do this plz, i need to know

lurkswithin 02-21-2008 02:50 AM

either you turn it off because of the electricity charges or you turn it off because of loud fans that won't let you sleep, or you change the fans to quieter ones and ignore the electrical costs of leaving your computer on all night. The other, about the NIC was answered also. Or your last option is to quit worrying about a silly online game and get some quality sleep.

Which non is rocket science!

krazymarvin 02-23-2008 09:16 PM

how would i be able to do it with the nic card

lurkswithin 02-24-2008 06:22 PM

In your BIOS (if supported) there is a place to enable hibernation or "wake on" configurations....

krazymarvin 02-24-2008 07:31 PM

ya my bios could do that
