A Laptop without OS

There's a laptop here without operating system installed now. This is an acer notelight laptop originally designed for windows 95, but we were told that windows 98 was lately installed to it. It has a cd-rom drive but it's not functioning. It has floppy drive where in i would like to install an OS, but it seems i already tried everything, that whenever i boot it with a floppy, "non-system disk or disk error... " appears. What shall i do? Pls. help me.:(

You can get a Win 95 / 98 bootdisk from here, If I remember right Win 95 was the last Microsoft operating system to be released on floppy disks.

Bootdisk.Com - Free Windows Bootdisks, Free DOS boot disk

Without a cd rom drive you are wasting your time trying...

If you are getting that boot error then it could be that the floppy drive has crashed on you also. I remeber those laptops and the floppy drives in there didn't last that long to begin with.

Hello!

I have already downloaded from bootdisk.com and tried all the possible bootdisk that i could use to make it run, but it never happens. And if there is a crash on its floppy drive, is there something that i can do?

I like this laptop. This isnt noisy when it's on, and i'm planning to use this, hopefully, for the programming purposes.

Thanks for being concerned to reply to me!

I re-read your original post. You stated that someone has already installed an upgrade from W95 to W98. And from that I get that the CD-rom doesn't work and you wish to install an operating system with the floppy disk drive.

98 or later cannot be just installed with a floppy disk drive. A preinstalled operating system can sometimes be booted by a floppy disk boot up program..that is all.

The laptop is old and the bios cannot be set to boot to a flash drive or an external harddrive so that too is out of the question.

What you might try doing is connecting it to another computer as a slave by the USB (not sure if it has one) and checking it out to see if the harddrive is loaded with an operating system or is even in working order.

Let us know and we can go on from there!
