Default Installing Windows XP to laptop

Windows on my laptop has completely crashed so I think I need to reformat the hard disk and reinstall windows. It does not have a floppy drive and when I tried booting from the CD an error message was displayed. Does anyone know of a way around this i.e. installing to a lap top with no floppy drive and no bootable cd drive.
