Unhappy Is my motherboard kaput?

At last I can get some time to visit Syschat again.

I posted in the General Software section about a problem with my Sony Vaio laptop. Now I think its more appropiate to this section.

Laptop;

Sony Vaio PCG - GRT 796SP

OS:

MS XP Pro SP2 (Sony OEM)

HDD:

Western Digital 120 GB

Ram:

1GB DDR SD RAM

Graphics:

Nividia GeForce FX Go 56000, 3D, 64MB VRAM

Motherboard: (?)

I cannot find any information on this item in all the documentation I have for the Vaio.

PROBLEM:

Vaio started shutting down on me etc. this eventually lead to me attempting a reinstall only to find I could not access my DVD drive, BIOS or anything. Now it has developed to the stage where the Vaio attempts to boot up but switches off immeadiately leaving only the power light on. So have I got a Kaput MB? I hope not as it might be a bit difficult getting a new one without putting into a shop to be repaired & paying through the nose to have it done, especially here where I live.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help
