trouble "No IDE Device" HDD problem on Presario R3000 notebook

Hi,

Thanks in advance to anyone who might help. I have been scouering the internet forever trying to fix this problem and hoping I won't have to take my laptop in to be repaired, I'm broke.

So whats happening is I bought a new HDD for my Compaq Presario R3000 it's an Western Digital Scorpio EIDE 160 GB. I put it in and started to install XP when it said there was no HDD. So I went into the bios and it was not detected there either, I did the HDD Self-Check and it said "No IDE Device".

From this point I put in the old HDD from this system (which had been wiped) and got the same results.

EDIT: I did check both HDD on another system to make sure they aren't the problem and they both are fine.

Right now I think my best bet is to run the XP install and do the F6 to first install a third-party SCSI / RAID controller and try to install the IDE Controller driver at that point, only I can't find ANY of the motherboard drivers from Compaq/HP anywhere online.

Does anyone have any ideas I am going nuts with this. Thanks again everyone.

-Andrew
