Default Connecting Dlink WBR1310 to Windows Vista

I have an older Dlink wireless router (WBR1310) which runs perfectly with my XP OS laptop, using WEP to access the network. However I just purchased a new Sony Vaio which has vista as its OS. When trying to connect to the network with this laptop, it recognizes the network but is unable to connect for "an unknown reason", even after entering the passkey. I can connect to the internet by plugging in directly to the laptop via ethernet port but not wireless. My neighbor suggested that my wireless network card may not be compatible with my older wireless router. Any advice on how I can get my new vista laptop to connect? Thanks.
